The Logo, the tree and the young men from Malawi.
We were looking for a suitable image of young people planting trees to go with our logo (do you know why we wanted our logo to look like a tree? No? Then come to the conference on July 8th !!) and wanted to illustrate our international slant.
We found this image on “Flickr” (an image web-site) and it seemed just right. Then we had to seek permission to use it. It turned out that the two young men are at a school in Malawi, and the school owns the rights to the picture. We asked if we could buy the right to use the picture and they suggested that as these two young men have only two years to go to complete their education, we should pay the fees for those two years. Slightly apprehensive about whether we could afford such a fee, we asked how much it would be. It turned out to be £66 – for both of them for the two years. That seemed a pretty reasonable price for a picture – but a wonderful bargain for two years’ education in terms of European prices!
We are now seeking establish a closer connection with the school so that we can continue to offer our support and draw on their expertise. It would also be good find out how the young men do, and how well the tree grew!
Working with schools abroad is a key part of the work of The Curriculum Foundation. We seek to learn from these schools and to learn alongside them, as well as offer support where we can.
If you have any links with schools abroad or stories of such links, then let us know through the forum..
